The Difference Engine is a collaborative novel between William Gibson and Bruce Sterling.  It takes place in an alternate England of the mid to late 1800s.

Basically, the Babbage Engine - often just called the "Engine" - actually worked, on a scale that grows with size.  Thus, a bigger Engine works better - though is perhaps more finicky.
